The Japanese American No-No Boys in World War II

The Japanese American No-No Boys in World War II To comprehend who the No-No Boys were, it’s first important to comprehend the occasions of World War II. The United States government’s choice to put in excess of 110,000 people of Japanese starting point into internment camps without cause during the war marks one of the most despicable parts in American history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt marked Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, almost three months after Japan assaulted Pearl Harbor. At that point, the central government contended that isolating Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans from their homes and jobs was a need on the grounds that such individuals represented a national security danger, as they were evidently prone to plot with the Japanese domain to design extra assaults on the U.S. Today history specialists concur that bigotry and xenophobia against individuals of Japanese heritage following the Pearl Harbor assault provoked the official request. All things considered, the United States was likewise at chances with Germany and Italy during World War II, however the government didn't structure mass internment of Americans of German and Italian source. Shockingly, the bureaucratic government’s offensive activities didn't end with the constrained departure of Japanese Americans. In the wake of denying these Americans of their social equality, the administration at that point approached them to battle for the nation. While some concurred in order to prove their reliability to the U.S., others won't. They were known as No-No Boys. Denounced at the ideal opportunity for their choice, today No-No Boys are to a great extent saw as saints for confronting a legislature that denied them of their opportunity. A Survey Tests Loyalty The No-No Boys got their name by addressing no to two inquiries on a review given to Japanese Americans constrained into death camps. Inquiry #27 posed: â€Å"Are you ready to serve in the military of the United States on battle obligation, any place ordered?† Inquiry #28 posed: â€Å"Will you swear inadequate loyalties to the United States of America and dependably safeguard the United States from any or all assault by remote or local powers, and renounce any type of devotion or acquiescence to the Japanese ruler, or other outside government, power or organization?† Insulted that the U.S. government requested that they pledge reliability to the nation after glaringly disregarding their common freedoms, some Japanese Americans would not enroll in the military. Straight to the point Emi, an internee at the Heart Mountain camp in Wyoming, was one such youngster. Irritated that his privileges had been stomped all over, Emi and about six other Heart Mountain internees framed the Fair Play Committee (FPC) in the wake of accepting draft takes note. The FPC announced in March 1944: â€Å"We, the individuals from the FPC, are not reluctant to do battle. We are not reluctant to hazard our lives for our nation. We would happily forfeit our lives to secure and maintain the standards and goals of our nation as set out in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, for on its sacredness depends the opportunity, freedom, equity, and insurance surprisingly, including Japanese Americans and all other minority gatherings. Be that as it may, have we been given such opportunity, such freedom, such equity, such security? NO!† Rebuffed for Standing Up For declining to serve, Emi, his individual FPC members, and in excess of 300 internees at 10 camps were indicted. Emi served year and a half in a government prison in Kansas. The main part of No-No Boys confronted three-year sentences in a government prison. Notwithstanding crime feelings, internees who wouldn't serve in the military confronted a reaction in Japanese American people group. For instance, pioneers of the Japanese American Citizens League described draft resisters as traitorous defeatists and censured them for giving the American open the possibility that Japanese Americans were unpatriotic. For resisters, for example, Gene Akutsu, the backfire took an awful close to home cost. While he just responded to no to Question #27-that he would not serve in the U.S. military on battle obligation any place requested he at last disregarded the draft saw got, bringing about him serving over three years in a government jail in Washington state. He left jail in 1946, yet that wasn’t soon enough for his mom. The Japanese American people group alienated her-in any event, advising her not to appear at chapel in light of the fact that Akutsu and another child challenged resist the national government. â€Å"One day everything got to her and she took her life,† Akutsu disclosed to American Public Media (APM) in 2008. â€Å"When my mom died, I allude to that as a wartime casualty.â€Å" President Harry Truman exculpated the entirety of the wartime draft resisters in December 1947. Subsequently, the criminal records of the youthful Japanese American men who would not serve in the military were cleared. Akutsu revealed to APM he wished his mom had been around to hear Truman’s choice. â€Å"If she had just lived one more year longer, we would have had a freedom from the president saying that we are for the most part alright and you have all your citizenship back,† he clarified. â€Å"That’s all she was living for.† The Legacy of the No-No Boys The 1957 novel No-No Boy by John Okada catches how Japanese American draft-resisters languished over their insubordination. In spite of the fact that Okada himself really addressed yes to the two inquiries on the steadfastness poll, enrolling in the Air Force during World War II, he talked with a No-No Boy named Hajime Akutsu after finishing his military assistance and was moved enough by Akutsu’s encounters to tell his story. The book has deified the passionate disturbance that No-No Boys suffered for settling on a choice that is currently to a great extent saw as gallant. The move in how No-No Boys are seen is to some extent because of the administrative government’s affirmation in 1988 that it had wronged Japanese Americans by interning them without cause. After twelve years, the JACL apologized for broadly criticizing draft resisters. In November 2015, the melodic Allegiance, which narratives a No-No Boy, appeared on Broadway.

Educating Rita Compare and Contrast - 1412 Words

Educating Rita is the semi-autobiography of playwright Willy Russell. The play was inspired by Russells experiences at evening classes. Much of the comedy arises from Ritas fresh, unschooled reaction to the classics of English literature. But she is never patronized by the Russell, who recognizes from his own experience that education is a means of escape from ones own circumstances. Educating Rita takes the lives of two people on the opposite ends of the social spectrum and brings them together in the pursuit of education. It is a small intimate play, but it tells a story of big ideas; ideas close to Willy Russells heart. There is a lot of humor in the writing, but it is also a serious play about class and choice. The play†¦show more content†¦The bill has not been paid so it has been shut down. In that moment, Julia tells Frank that she is going to leave him and she admits to have an affair. Moreover, the audience comes to know Ritas husband Denny better in a movie than in the play. He is not only spoken of, in the film but also has some important appearances. For example there is one scene in which he changes the house to build a room for a baby. By this acting, it is made clear for the viewers, how much Denny wants to become a father. Denny, strongly opposes Rita spending time on education. He wants her to have a baby and become a house-wife and throughout most of the play he is trying to make her quit, what she is doing. Denny is definitely the opposition character. In the play Rita tells Frank that Denny has burnt all her books, and again the action is retold. In the movie we actually get to see the anger and anxiety of Denny, which gives a much more clear background and perhaps a deeper understanding of Ritas conflict with her husband. I guess the play is much more predictable in the sense that a great many things are bound not to happen on stage. In fact, in the play nothing takes place outside Franks office. All action is inevitably confined w ithin four walls. The movie is several scenes richer. Some of the scenes in the play are retold by the actors and some of them are not there at all. Recruitment and Selection with Observed Skills †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Recruitment and Selection with Observed Skills. Answer: Reflection on planning and implementing structured and behavioral job selection I think that observation is an essential skill which enhances the imaginative power of the individuals. Proper observation of the happenings of the surroundings helps the individuals to form new ideas about their existence. Making practical usage of this observation in the performing the basic tasks inculcates self-assessment skills within the individuals (Zimmerman 2013). This aspect partially sets the ground for the main discussion. I personally feel that self assessment skills are applicable for each and every diversified field to which the humans have easy access. Within this, recruitment and selection gains an important position, as it needs refined observation skills for giving employment to the rightful candidate. The motive of the previous sentence establishes essential linkages between the two variables of the subject matter of the assignment. Countering this, the assignment, through a reflective perspective attempts to portray the importance of self-assessment skills on recruitment and selection. Theoretical application towards this interrelationship enlivens the ways and means to enhance the individuality through self assessment (Breaugh 2017). In view of the above perspective, planning is the outcome of observation. Keen observation of the external environment helps the individuals to make concrete plans regarding the performance of the tasks. If I keenly observe what is happen in my surrounding, I would be able to develop plans for carrying out the tasks in an effective and efficient manner. For example, if I consider it from the perspective of an HR, observing the body language and expression of the candidate is crucial in terms of extracting the best out of the preconceived skills, expertise and knowledge. This type of behavior towards the recruitment reflects the presence of systematized approach towards the execution of allocated activities (Miles and Sadler 2014). I think consideration of Kolbs learning cycle would enhance the clarity of the readers regarding the importance of observation skills. The observation skills finds second place in Kolbs learning cycle. This observation is the outcome of concrete experience, which attains success only with the rational application of the possessed ideas, thoughts and concepts. Here, I can develop a counter argument. The stage of reflective observation can be considered as giving words to the visual perception regarding the events occurring in the surrounding (Epstein et al. 2015). If I am a HR manager, penning down the exact happenings of the interview would add value to my reflective observation. However, I need to include each and every detail of the interview process, including the approach of the candidates towards the proposed questions. The other stages of the cycle are abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. Delving deep into the cycle, the stages are interlinked with each other. Here, I can say that an individual can directly conceptualize his experience through the effective application of the observation skills. Observation attains the third place in Gibbs Reflective cycle. Review of both the models equalizes observation and evaluation. Countering this, evaluation is the after effect of observation. Counter arguing this, observation after evaluation sharpens the focus of the individuals (Ouweneel, Le Blanc and Schaufeli 2013). After a thorough review of both these perspectives, I can say that commonality of the word cycle portrays the journey of an individuals life in terms of reflecting upon their performance. This reflection can be considered to add meaning in their existence. Critical reflection to the names of the models, learning is the primary stage and reflection comes much later. Countering this, learning can also be conducted after reflection of the self assessment and identification of the major drawbacks, which acts as an obstacle in my development process. In view of this perspective, learning can be related to the penultimate stage of the Gibbs reflective cycle (Tansley and Tiet ze 2013). I think if this learning is done through observation, my learning graph would be enhanced. Along with Gibbs reflective cycle and Kolbs learning cycle, I feel Schrons approach to reflection is also important in terms of shedding light on my personal development. As a matter of specification, Schron proposes two approaches: one during the action and the other on the action. Reflection can be done for both the actions as well as for separate actions. Reflection on the action is the most common rather than reflection of the action. The commonality of both the perspectives develops a counter argument for the propositions on and in (Rajan 2014). With the in action perspective, I can relate the observation skills. Observing the events of the surroundings makes helps me in attaching evaluation with the actions that I am performing. Evaluating my performance at a frequent interval brings to the forefront the major drawbacks, which acts as an obstacle in my personal development. Exposure of spontaneous attitude in modifying the drawbacks enhances my personality. Reflection of this s pontaneity in the performance of each and every task would take me closer to my professional development as well. On the contrary, reflection after the completion of the tasks also proves beneficial for me in terms of applying my thoughts regarding the reflecting upon my performance. Herein lays the effectiveness of the proposition on. If I perceive these aspects from the viewpoint of HR Manager, adopting a structural approach towards the recruitment and selection process is crucial. Awareness regarding the intensity of following a structure upgrades my personal characteristic traits. I think maturity is an essential component, which needs to be present in terms of applying appropriate observation skills for selecting the rightful candidate. Goals for future development Aording to Good (2014), setting goals is important in terms of making noticeable advancements in life. However, I think at the initial stage, if short term goals are developed, the focus of the individuals would be enhanced. Evaluation is important in terms of judging the effectiveness of the identified and specified goals. Exposure of willingness is extremely important for attaining perfection in the performance of the basic tasks. Consciousness towards evaluation ties goals and development in the same thread. Here I can develop a counter argument stating that setting short term goals improves the focus of the individuals in terms of progressing towards the proper development process. Attaching the aspect with recruitment and selection, I think setting or structure would enable me to carry out the tasks in an efficient and effective manner. As a sequential step, setting short term goals for carrying out these tasks would alter my perspective towards the performance. Inclusion of eva luation within this process would project the major drawbacks, which acts as a barrier in carrying out the tasks with efficiency (Moon 2013). Countering this, if I apply rational thinking while doing the tasks, I would be able to emerge successful in accomplishing the identified and specified goals. If I start from the root, I need to set goals for improving my academic career. Herein, my capabilities in school and college would be a primary element. I think my flexibility in doing challenging tasks would help me to take enduring jobs such as challenging the questions proposed by the Board of Directors. If the panel themselves instruct to counter the questions, then it would not be my disobedience towards their experience. Here setting goals means I would have to gain in-depth knowledge about each and every perspective associated with the interview questions, approaches, strategy among others. From my childhood, I lack confidence in taking concrete decisions. Herein, I need to take a spontaneous decision and evaluate its impact on my rest of the actions. Frequency needs to be maintained in the execution of evaluation. For this, I constantly need to undertake challenging and enduring tasks. Indulging in partnership working would not enhance my individuality. However, I would require help from my colleagues regarding certain tasks. This assistance would act as an agent to expose better performance on my own efforts. Involving the colleagues in the decision making process would bestow upon me several solutions. Here my goal would be to make rational application for selecting the appropriate solution for the betterment of the company as well as the candidates. Within this, I need to set goals regarding the preservation of the individual sentiments of the candidates and the people who work with me. This would reflect my ethical considerations at workplace. Consciousness towards the ethical considerations would qualify me to experiment with others viewpoints. Herein, I need to expose conscious approach regarding calling them for interview. I think inclusion of one to one discussions with the selected candidates in the plans and programs would make me easily approachable among my colleagues and other personnel. Negligent attitude towards rectification of the weaknesses would act as an obstacle for me in terms of progressing towards development. This is a challenge for me in terms of my contribution towards the betterment of the candidates and students as a whole. Goals Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Week 9 Identifying the weaknesses Sitting in discussions Setting goals First round evaluation Making the necessary changes Making plans Second round evaluation Attending personality development courses Attending communication courses Assessing the personality Final round evaluation Table: Gantt chart for goal setting I think evaluation would be important in terms of assessing the effectiveness of the goals, set for starting the actual action. Plans regarding attending the personality development courses and communication courses are the typical evidence of this fact (Harter 2015). I feel that attending communication courses is itself an agent of enhancing my personality. Speaking fluently in English with the candidates would create a standardized image about me in the minds of the managers as well as the candidates. Silently shaping my personality would be my goal for altering the images about me. On the contrary, if I expose my attempts, I might get deviated from the focus, which would limit my scope and arena for progressing into a proper and effective development. In view of this perspective, I need to take an independent stance for the actions that I perform. Taking the assistance of the materials such as templates, checklists among others would enhance my clarity regarding the goal, which I need to reach. Focused attitude in this direction would mitigate the obscurity regarding the benchmark, within which I have been bounded for validating my employment. Self coloring of the weeks for the identified goals is my confidence regarding emerging successful in proving my capability. I might not be able to accomplish all the goals; however, persistent attempts would prove fruitful for me in terms of achieving most of the goals. Application of keen observance in this direction would bring to the forefront the drawbacks, which I need to modify spontaneously for upgrading my personality. Critical reflection on recruitment and selection process Further knowledge regarding the aspect of goal setting can be achieved through the application of theoretical perspective. According to a cycle, theory attains the peak position. With the task of assessing the effectiveness of the goal accomplishment, I can tag it as hypothetical. The major drive behind this is to establish essential linkages between the positive and negative aspects of my goal setting and observation on the recruitment and selection process. The projection for the perspective of the previous sentence is as follows: H0: Setting goals after observing the needs and requirements of the company would aggravate my difficulties in terms of carrying out the recruitment and selection process H1: After observing the ongoing crisis of the company, setting goals would enable me to execute the tasks in an efficient and effective manner. Acting according to identified goals is my performance of the actual research through which I can gift talented minds to the company for its betterment. Adopting an integrated structure for the execution of the plans regarding the recruitment helps me to experiment the developed hypothesis. Selecting the candidates whose profiles match with the requirements of the company and evaluating the selection is my reflection on the action. Delving deep into the aspect, evaluating after sending 4-5 candidates for interview is my reflection in the action, rather the actual time of my performing the action. Consideration of the results of this performance for observing my behavior in the recruiting the desirable candidates would alter the goals, which I had set prior to the initiation of the activities. Each and every component of the cycle is interrelated, rather complementary. Absence of hypothesis would not help me in projecting the positive and negative aspects of the applied theoretical approach. This absence acts as an obstacle for me to carry out the tasks according to the plans. Failure in terms of carrying out the tasks attaches a negative connotation to the aspects of observation. Therefore each and every aspect is needed for achieving perfection in the field in which I am employed. I think here, eager and conscious approach is needed at each step for applying keen observation. Here, I can say that the attitude of consciousness helps me to carry out the tasks in an efficient and effective manner. I can expose this attitude only if I possess enough maturity to think rationally about doing the recruitment and selection process. Hypothetical research along with keen observation enhances my imaginative power, which helps me to develop new strategies for selecting and recruitin g the right candidate. According to one of the other cycle, theory maintains its position. If I use a theory to make estimations regarding the number of candidates I would select, it is my hypothetical approach towards the recruitment and selection. This is in reference to the positive and negative thoughts related to my contribution towards enhancement of the future of the aspirant candidates. Calling the shortlisted candidates for interview is transforming my thoughts into action. Herein lays the appropriateness of the stage of experimentation. Involving the selected candidates in group discussions can be one of the other examples of experimenting with my plans. Application of keen observation regarding the results of this discussion helps me to assess the appropriateness of the hypothetical approach, which I adopted at the initial stage. I think if I take the step of observation directly after applying a particular theory, it would help me in judging the effectiveness of the applied theory. If I apply this approach, I think I can save a lot of time for carrying out the other tasks. In view of this perspective, the aspects of prediction and experiment gets lagged behind. Countering this, I can say that estimations regarding the proposed plans bring all the components of the cycle in the same alignment. According to construct validity, our thoughts and emotions possess a cause- effect outcome (refer to Appendix 1). We think about a certain issue, under the influence of the surroundings. Thoughts in this direction attain shape, when their effects come before us. If I start the activities related to recruitment and selection without making any plans, I would obviously achieve negative outcomes. Generalizing the concepts, which I plan, turns the status of my performance into program centric, which in case of particularity is cause and effect centric. Introducing several policies regarding recruitment and selection is my approach towards the role that I am offered. Observing the implications of the implemented policies on the candidates and the company as a whole is what I am visualizing. Modifying my performance according to these observations adds value to this visualization. Countering this, I can observe the performance of the company and then introduce programs and policies for altering the business scenario. Typical examples in this direction are insurance policies for the candidates, promise regarding standard appraisals for the performance exposed by the employees among others. Along with this, inclusion of crisis management resolutions, anti-discrimination policies reflects my keen observation towards the events and happenings, which is essential for maintaining the order and decorum of the workplace. Pondering upon the aspects of constructs and validity, constructive approach towards the selecting the candidates validates my actions. This example ties both the aspects in the same thread. Along with this, effective and judicious utilization of the ideas, concepts and thoughts formed concretizes my construction of plans and programs for achieving efficiency in the process of recruitment and selection process. Viewing it from other perspective, this efficiency is brightens the predicament of the parameter of the company. Along with this, it also upgrades my personal character as a HR Manager. I think this upgradation is the outcome of keen observation and experimentation with the preconceived knowledge and approach towards carrying out the recruitment and selection process. Active observation of the body language and expression of the candidates while explaining them the basic norms helps me in evaluating their performance. On the contrary, reflecting on my performance through video recording of the interview process would expose me to my actual performance. This action bears similarity with interaction between the selves. This is the philosophical and internal relationship between the self and the other self. My ordinary self is the projection of my identity, where I just sway away with the usual occurings of the company. My other self is my traits where I, through evaluating and observation, attempt to alter the plight of the company as well as the candidates through the introduction of policies and beneficial programs. In between lays my persistent attempts to alter my personality, so that I can lure the candidates towards the company. Not only this, application of effective management skills need to be applied for fulfilling the identified and the specified requirements. Along with this, observation of the performance of the selected candidates through consistent observation and evaluation would enhance my personality in terms of achieving personal development through professional development. Reviewing all the headings of the assignment, the heading setting goals for future can be placed in the ultimate position. This is in reference to the assessment of the hypothetical approach towards the applied theories. Herein lays the true essence of observation, which beautifies my future lives as well as career. Asian Heritage essays

Asian Heritage essays In The Accidental Asian by Eric Liu, Liu is faced with the complexity of his heritage. Liu is a second-generation Chinese American. Throughout Lius essays he speaks of the disadvantages of being an Asian American and how in his life he dealt with it. Liu also speaks of his family and their values of keeping their heritage alive without his parents being overbearing and discriminating towards Lius choices in life. In Eric Lius The Accidental Asian, Liu speaks of Chineseness which he says ... is not a mystical, more authentic way of being; its just a decision to act Chinese(pg. 10). It seems in the novel that Liu is not questioning whether he is Chinese or American or one more than another, I feel Liu is while being both Chinese and American he had such a hard time accepting or questioning the Chinese qualities more than the American ones. Liu was what his parents called an ABC, an American-born Chinese(pg.43), Liu had seen himself as a social immigrant when he was younger. Since Liu was a child he was faced with the burden of sometimes feeling left out due to his physical appearance and characteristics being not like others around him. Liu was not ashamed of being Chinese but he wished sometimes that things would be easier for him like the others in his school. When Liu was twelve he realized the bowl cut he was so used to for the past eleven years was now out of style. Liu was now in an era in the 1980s where feathered hair was the way to go and Lius hair was the straight wiry kind that would not be apt to be brushed back with the likelihood of staying. So one day his friend dared him to shave it off and he did Liu felt that he had managed, without losing face, to rid myself of my greatest social burden(pg.42). Liu also had to struggle with the fact that to girls in his school which were mostly all white he was only the funny, cute, sweet friend&...

What personal responsibility do Ferdinand and Isabella bear for the Essay

What personal responsibility do Ferdinand and Isabella bear for the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1942 - Essay Example In order to deal with this issue, they introduced the Inquisition, but reports from the Inquisitors only confirmed their fears that converts to Christianity could not be considered secure in the faith until they could be prevented from having any contact with Jews. Shortly after the fall of Granada, with the Muslim threat quashed, and Christian emotion running high, they decided to move for expulsion. Therefore, they bear great personal responsibility, but it should be noted that they were heavily influenced by the Inquisition, and by political developments. It has often been suggested that in the period leading up to the expulsion edict, greater intolerance and anti-Semitism had been developing in Europe generally. From the 13th century onwards, what Gavin Langmuir termed ‘chimeric antisemitism’ arguably made itself felt in Europe (Peters, 17). Evidence of popular resentment against Jews, as the perceived enemies of Christendom, is plentiful. For example, there were massacres in the Rhineland in 1096, as the First Crusade began. Spanish society, which had hitherto been characterised chiefly by its peaceful coexistence, was not exempt from this trend towards anti-Semitism. Altabà © certainly adopts this viewpoint, as he states that ‘Muslim caliphs and Christian kings often referred to themselves with pride as emperors of the three religions’ (728). Until the 14th century, as Peters notes, the public life of the Iberian states was commonly termed convivencia, or ‘peacefully living together’ (9). Ca stile and Aragon were unique cases in Western Europe, in terms of their religious and cultural diversity. They had the most substantial populations of Muslims and Jews in the region, and despite the restrictions placed on the latter, Jews were still able to rise to positions of power, wealth and prominence. Jews were to be found among the advisers of the monarchs and lords, and many of the most exalted

Photographers during the Harlem Renaissance Essay Example for Free

Photographers during the Harlem Renaissance Essay The years between World War I and the Great Depression was a period of prosperity for the United States. 1 There were plenty of jobs in the city especially in the North which caused 750,000 African Americans to migrate from the South. Harlem, a section of New York City, drew a great number of African Americans, consequently making it the largest community of African Americans in the whole world. In the 1920’s, the African Americans that have settled in Harlem experienced a â€Å"spiritual coming of age† and were able to find an opportunity for â€Å"group expression and self determination. 2 As a result, literature, art, music and social commentary, usually concerning the African-American culture, began to flourish in Harlem. 3 Originally called the New Negro Movement, the revolution became more popular as Harlem Renaissance. Aside from writers, dancers, blues and jazz artists, the Harlem Renaissance was able to produce renowned photographers that became known for their own creative ways of depicting the literary and socially revolutionary era. This paper will present the photography styles of three photographers from the Harlem Renaissance namely: James VanDerZee, Carl Van Vechten and Gordon Parks. James VanDerZee Born on June 29, 1886 in Lennox, Massachusetts, VanderZee is almost completely self-taught in photography. 4 He started taking pictures as a child but got his first exposure in photography when he worked as a darkroom assistant in Newark, New Jersey in 1915. He ultimately became a portraitist and returned to Harlem in 1916, setting up his own portrait studio at a music conservatory that his sister founded in 1911. He soon set about the business of photographing Harlem. Prominent citizens, socialites, political and religious leaders graced his studio. 5 The portrait of Bill â€Å"Bojangles† Robinson, the famous tap dancer, taken in 1933 is shown in a double portrait. He also 3 photographed Florence Mills, a famous actress during that era; Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. , minister of Abyssinian Baptist Church; Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion; and Marcus Garvey, the African American nationalist who promoted a â€Å"Back to Africa† movement in the 1920’s. 6 VanderZee also photographed ordinary African Americans, usually during momentous occasions in their lives such as weddings or funerals. Since infant mortality was higher during his time than it is now, VanDerzee was often asked to take a picture of a loved one who had died so that the bereaved family will have something in remembrance of their departed loved ones. 7 His pictures were ultimately published as Harlem Book of the Dead. In his portraits of children, he positions the child as if asleep and usually holding their favorite toy. In other cases, he inserts pictures of angels and photographs of the child when he was still alive, into the pictures of the dead body that he took. He does this in order to â€Å"take the gruesomeness of the picture† and make it look like the children suffer no longer but have found rest. One of the trademarks of VanDerZee’s photographs is his depiction of his fellow African Americans as beautiful and dignified. 7 One of his well-known works, The Couple at Harlem, taken in 1932, shows a couple dressed in raccoon coats posing beside their Cadillac. This portrait, characteristic of VanDerZee, shows security and prosperity in the neighborhood. As early as the 1930’s, VanDerzee was already experimenting with photography styles. He already does retouching of photographs, at times even adding adornments to the pictures that he took. He erases wrinkles, adds jewelry, and creates his own backdrop in order to create a touch entirely his own. 7 He may sometimes cut down the mouth or sharpen the nose in order to make the image more pleasing to look at. VanDerZee, when working in 4 his studio, used plenty of props such as backdrops, costumes and architectural elements in order to achieve a photograph with an air of Victorian and Edwardian era to it. 4 The Couple At Harlem. [Online Image] Available http://ls. berkeley. edu/~shiffrar/photog/vanderzee. jpg, 1932 VanDerzee also experimented with other photographic techniques such as the double-exposure technique. This style was used in The Last Goodbye, Overseas, which features a wartime cartoon superimposed on the photograph of a soldier. The viewer, upon looking at the soldier’s photograph will be able to see his thought as he remembers his lost companions. 5 By the same technique, he created Future Expectations (Wedding Day, Harlem) which features a bride and groom posing in front of a fireplace. A dream-like image of their future daughter, holding a doll in her lap, appears next to the couple. He seem to be passionately interested in female portraits for even as a youth in Iowa, he took photographs of his paternal grandmother and later on of two little black girls in front of a beach house in Ohio. 9 Van Vechten sometimes prints these photos to use in regular correspondence. Some of his more famous subjects include jazz artists Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.

George Gershwin Essay -- essays research papers

George Gershwin was born Jacob Gershowitz on September 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. George began his professional career in "Tin Pan Alley," a location in New York City where aspiring composers and songwriters would bring their scores to a publisher trying to sell the tunes for cash. Two years after he started work for Jerome Remick, George had his first song published. "When You Want 'Em You Can't Get 'Em" was not an instantly famous, but it did begin to attract the attention of some of the Broadway composers of the day. During this time of professional growth, George kept his job as a rehearsal pianist and studied piano, theory and orchestration with the best of the best. George's first big hit was a song delivered by Al Jolson in the Broadway musical Sinbad. "Swanee" became an instant hit and propelled George's music before the Broadway audience regularly. In 1919, George composed the music for La, La Lucille, his first full musical score. From 1920 to 1924 he supplied producer George White with several songs for use in the immensely popular George White Scandals series. Behind Rhapsody in Blue, George is mainly known for numerous songs, which have become a part of the American songbook. The full scale collaboration of George and Ira Gershw in as composer/lyricist began in 1924 with the musical Lady Be Good!. The musical featured songs such as "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Oh, Lady, be Good" among others. One song, which wa...

Antz vs Lion King Political

People may just watch Disney movies and walk out of the theater without having any knowledge of the meaning in the movie they just watched. They take their kids to pass the time away and maybe laugh for a few moments. Despite this, these people should know that inside every movie there is a meaning, even if it is an animated Disney movie. In this paper, I will discuss the movie Antz and the movie The Lion King. In the movie Antz, directed by Eric Darnell and Tim Johnson, Z 4195 is a worker ant. Feeling unimportant in this conformity system, he accidentally meets beautiful Princess Bala, who has a similar problem on the other end of the social scale. In order to meet her again, Z switches sides with his soldier friend Weaver. By doing this, he ends up crossing the path of General Mandible (Bala's fiance), who wants to divide the ant society into a superior, strong race (soldiers) and an inferior, soon to be killed race (the workers). But Z and Bala, both oblivious of the dangerous situation, try to leave the cruel system by heading for Insectopia, where there is no such system and all insects coexist in harmony. In the movie The Lion King, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, a young lion prince is born in Africa, making his uncle Scar the second in line to be king. Scar plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa and Prince Simba, in order to make himself King. The King is killed and Simba is led to believe by Scar that it was his fault, so Simba leaves the kingdom. After years of exile he returns back to the kingdom to take back what was once his father’s, and now his. After watching both of the films, there seemed to be a political message in both of them. In the movie Antz, it seems as if they are trying to show a totalitarian government. According to the American Heritage dictionary, totalitarian is defined as: being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed (American Heritage). In other words, General Mandible runs a totalitarian government in order to make the army ants superior than the worker ants. He wants to take full control of the ant colony by marrying the princess and trying to kill the queen in order to make himself king. The one ant, Z, tries to promote individualism so it can be the remedy for the totalitarian government General Mandible is trying to run. Individualism is defined as: belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence (American Heritage). He tries to tell the other ants that they don’t have to work if they don’t want to. The work they do is the reason why their society is becoming larger. In the movie The Lion King, it seems as if it shows a dictatorship. Dictatorship is defined as: Absolute or despotic control or power (American Heritage). Despite this, Scar, the inferior brother to King Mufasa, tries to take control over Mufasa and Simba and rule the lands. King Mufasa and the animals of Africa are the protagonists. The antagonists are Scar and the Hyenas, who want to control Africa. Some critics have said that Scar is portrayed as Hitler, who leads the hyenas (Nazis) to overthrow King Mufasa and the rest of the animals (Europe) (IMDB). When Scar does take over, everything starts to deteriorate (such as the Nazis did to Eastern Europe). It seemed as if they were running concentration camps. When Simba returns, everything returns to normal-the trees grow back and the grass turns bright green again, symbolizing the relief ceased (The Nazi fall). In a way, these two films are similar. In each movie, both of the antagonists are depicted as evil and angry. They try to take control of the whole colony or kingdom. When they see an obstacle in the way, they try to eliminate it so they can obtain an easy path to the throne. In the movie Antz, individualism is represented as a great value. Z, the individualistic ant, tries to confront General Mandible for his wrongdoings. He tries to stand up for himself and what he believes in, and soon after the rest of the colony starts to follow his ideas. Seeing that Z has now won over the colony with his beliefs, General Mandible gives out a compelling speech about how the colony needs the workers, and that they have their place in helping build a better colony. He goes on to tell his soldiers, â€Å"Gentlemen, now you can see how dangerous individualism can be. It makes us†¦vulnerable. † (Antz, General Mandible). This is why he wants to destroy the working ants. He knows that if the ants all become individualistic, that he will be overrun and not be able to pursue the superior race that he greatly wants. Later on, Z goes on to tell Princess Bala, â€Å"†¦he just died in my arms. I don’t think that once in his life he made his own choice. † (Antz, Z). Here he is talking about one of the soldiers, who told Z not to follow orders all of his life. This scene depicts the reality of the ant colony; unfortunately, the entire colony, especially the ants, were always following commands and following orders-they had no choice. On the contrary, The Lion King does not depict any degree of unhappiness under the rule of King Mufasa. All the animals are living in harmony, doing as they please; therefore, their individualism is not threatened by King Mufasa’s power. Once Scar comes into rule, he begins to dictate and change everything about the kingdom. He gave the hyenas superior authority over the lions and the other animals. Soon, the rest of the animals start to leave the area and the kingdom becomes infested solely with hyenas. With the dictatorship of Scar, the animals’ freedom and sense of individualism was diminished. The political power in each film is exercised in a similar matter. Both movies contain a monarchy, which contains a queen in the movie Antz, and a king in the movie The Lion King. In the movie Antz, the queen ant has a daughter who is the princess. Soon after the Queen dies, the princess will take her place and so on. In order for General Mandible to take control of the whole colony and become king, he must marry Princess Bala. He takes advantage of the monarchy, and turns it into more of a totalitarian government. On the other hand, The Lion King, has a different approach to its monarchy. King Mufasa expresses to his son that they follow the â€Å"Circle of Life† (Allers, Minkoff). In the â€Å"Circle of Life†, King Mufasa explains that, â€Å"When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great Circle of Life†. (Allers, Minkoff). The kingdom in which they live, is not about exercising a control in one’s power, but rather, it is about respect. King Mufasa does take pride in being king, but he does not command and tell the other animals what to do in every aspect of their lives. Scar was second in line to the throne, being King Mufasa’s brother, but Simba’s birth made him the direct heir to the throne, thus pushing back Scar to third in line. And as the story goes, Scar becomes furious and turns on his own family because he is greedy. He then goes on to kill his brother and he tries to kill Simba but with no success. Simba returns from going away for a while, and goes back to being king and completing the â€Å"Circle of Life†. In each of the films, it shows us what a government should do in a situation where it endangers its people. In Antz, after General Mandible takes the soldier ants out of the colony, and closes in the working ants, the worker ants come together and help each other out. The people (ants) of the government (ant colony), need to stick together and not be against each other. In the end, General Mandible says, â€Å"I am the colony†, and soon after tries to kill Z but ends up killing himself. The colony came together and stood up for what they believed in, and took down the tyrant who was trying to make the colony â€Å"better† by turning it into a totalitarian government. In The Lion King, the government (jungle) does not really put up a fight against Scar. They let him control the lands and do whatever he pleases with the hyenas. Only when Simba comes back, the other lions are motivated to fight. In a point in the movie, Scar is cornered and blames everything on the hyenas and is soon after pushed over the cliff by Simba. Although Scar killed King Mufasa, Simba did not want to kill Scar. Instead justice was served when the hyenas attacked Scar because he had turned his back on them after false promises. You can see that all over the world, there have been dictators, such as Fidel Castro or Hitler, that have fallen. They have fallen not only because of their decisions, but because of the people. Like the aforementioned, there is more to a movie than you think. Before doing this paper, I just thought these movies were just animated films that were made for children. But the truth is that they have a meaning towards the adult viewers also. I believe that in Antz, the ants try to overthrow General Mandible’s totalitarian government in order to achieve a full sense of individualism. In the movie The Lion King, I believe that there is a dictatorship when Scar is in command. He does not rule the lands like King Mufasa, who gave everyone an equal right to live and be happy. Despite the antagonist’s attempts to rule, their justice is served, and in both movies the protagonists get what they want. All in all, always find the true meaning behind a film.

Evaluation Of A Project Management ( Apm ) Essay - 1600 Words

A project is a temporary organization that is created for the purpose of delivering one or more business product in accordance to an agreed business case (PRINCE2 2005). However, this definition doesn’t seem to elaborate on all the principles and numerous factors, which define a project as compared to Association for Project Management (APM). APM defines a project as an endeavor in which, human materials and financial resources are organized in a novel. Therefore, being able to deliver a unique scope of work of given specification often within constraints of cost and time, in order to achieve beneficial changes which is defined by quantitative and qualitative objectives. It’s common for a project to be mistaken for an operation or vise verse. Though, the difference between these two subject/principles is highly distinctive. George D (2000) states that an operation is a permanent or ongoing execution of activities, which produces repetitive results, the results maybe in a form of a product or service. An operation usually has the same resources, same tasks and a standard output expectation. For example, a construction company might embark on a project to purchase two heavy-duty dumb trucks to help transport materials on sites. This project will have a start date and a fixed finish date. The project manager will set dates for the duration it will take to collect finances, with the help from the finance office, when to make transactions and if the is training required forShow MoreRelatedBusiness Organization, Atlantic, Pacific Management1513 Words   |  7 Pagesâ€Å"Providing Next Level Service,† is a philosophy that more companies should strive to carry out.
